PURPOSE: In preparing industrially advantageously the titled compound from a reaction solution obtained by subjecting diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide to demethylation reaction, to improve yield by separating and purifying easily the reaction solution without causing by-products through acid treatment followed by distillation.
CONSTITUTION: Diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide is subjected to demethylation reaction in the presence of an iron salt and/or a copper salt in an organic solvent such as methyl isobutyl ketone, etc., to give a reaction product solution comprising diacetylbenzene as a main reaction product. The reaction product solution is then treated with an acid, especially preferably paratoluenesulfonic acid, and distilled, to purify and to separate diacetylbenzene. A method wherein a liquid or solid acid is brought into contact with the solution to be treated, and distillation under heating at 40W250°C may be cited as the acid treatment. The distillation is carried out usually under reduced pressure, especially 1W 500mmHg at 30W250°C.
