PURPOSE: To provide a method for purifying L-ascorbic acid by employing a column chromatography using a strongly acidic cation exchange resin to the aqueous solution of a crude L-ascorbic acid.
CONSTITUTION: This method for purifying L-ascorbic acid comprises e.g. performing a column chromatography using a strongly acidic cation exchange resin of a sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer and a simulated moving bed method to the aqueous solution of a crude L-ascorbic acid containing 0.01-50W/V% L-ascorbic acid, 0-10W/V% 2 keto-L-gulonic acid, 3W/V% furoylformic acid and 0-4W/V% sodium chloride. The simulated moving bed method has a characteristic of capable of using plural packed beds, utilizing an adsorbent in a high efficiency comparing with a mono bed method and curtailing the amount of an eluting solution, and is suitable for the treatment of a large amount. Especially, it is suitable for the cases containing 2-keto-L- gulonic acid and is capable of applying as a mother liquid for the crystallization of L-ascorbic acid in the process of a L-ascorbic acid production, and separating and purifying it effectively in a good efficiency.
