Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recover high purity betaine from waste liquor having a high concn. of salts in the solid composition produced from a chromatographic separating process in the beet sugar industry or from a concentrate of the waste liquor.
SOLUTION: Waste liquor produced from a two component separation false moving bed type chromatographic separating apparatus (packed with a salt form highly acidic cation exchange resin as packing material) for recovering sucrose from a liq. beet extract or beet molasses or a concentrate of the waste liquor is used as a stock soln. and a crude betaine fraction is separated from the stock soln. with a two component separation false moving bed type chromatographic separating apparatus packed with an ion form highly acidic cation exchange resin which equilibrates with the stock soln. A betaine fraction is separated from the crude betaine fraction or its concentrate with a two component separation false moving bed type chromatographic separating apparatus packed with a highly acidic cation exchange resin obtd. by converting ≥10% (based on ion exchange capacity) of the ion form resin into a calcium form resin. The betaine fraction is concd. and crystallized to obtain the objective high purity betaine.
