PURPOSE: To recover desulfurized lead from fines incorporating lead such as spent buttery fines.
CONSTITUTION: In an electric furnace 1 equipped with immersed electrodes 5, 6, (a) the fines are melted under not very reducing conditions in the presence of a small amt. of carbon, thereby separating the same to the crude metallic lead 8 and lead-incorporating slag 7, and simultaneously, removing sulphur in the form of sulphur dioxide and optionally recovering the crude metallic lead, (b) the lead-incorporating slag is reduced with a suitable amt. of carbon, thereby separating the reduced substantially lead-free slag and the crude metallic lead, and (c) a stage for recovering the cruide metallic lead obtd. in a stage (b) and optionally a stage (a) is successively performed. A substantially total amt. of sulphur is removed in the form of a high concentrations SO2- incorporating gas, thus the produced slag is stable and the generation of dust is small.
