Abstract:

To provide a method for effectively recovering platinum from gas engine components.

A method for recovering high purity platinum efficiently in a short time in recovering platinum used in gas turbine components of an aircraft includes the steps of: contacting an engine component with a chemical including an acid; removing a barrier coating and platinum aluminide from the engine component; dissolving soluble metals out of the engine component; separating the barrier coating, platinum aluminide and soluble metals from the engine component; revealing a platinum-rich layer as part of the engine component; mechanically separating the platinum-rich layer from the engine component; centrifuging the platinum-rich layer; and recovering the platinum from the gas engine component.
