Title:
METHOD FOR RECOVERING SULFONYL CYANIDES
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3227675
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To recover the compound by hydrolyzing sulfynyl sulfones produced as a byproduct from a reaction of sulfonyl cyanides and cyclopentadiene, neutralizing the hydrolyzate and further reacting the resultant sulfinic acid salt with a cyanogen halide.
CONSTITUTION: Sulfonyl cyanides of formula I (R1 and R2 are H, an alkyl, halogen, alkoxy or nitro) are made to react with cyclopentadiene in the presence of water to afford 2-azabicyclo[2,2,1]hepto-5-ene-3-one. Sulfynylsulfones of formula II produced as a by-product at this time are hydrolyzed to give sulfinic acids, which are then dissolved in water and neutralized to afford the corresponding sulfinic acid salts and then the sulfinic acid salts are made to react with a cyanogen halide at 0-10°C to economically recover sulfonyl cyanides. 2- Azabicylo[2,2,1]hepto-5-ene-3-one is useful as a synthetic intermediate for carbocyclic nucleosides.
