To provide a method for stably and economically removing or reducing sulfur content, over a long period of time, from cracked oil gas components which is obtained from an apparatus for cracking heavy oil in the absence of hydrogen and contains large amounts of sulfur and olefin, without reducing olefin content.
The method for reducing sulfur content in a hydrocarbon comprises: a step of increasing molecular weights of sulfur compounds by processing a raw material hydrocarbon which has 1 vol% olefin content and 100 mass ppm sulfur content, and in which a mercaptan sulfur content is 80 mass%, a sulfide sulfur content is 10 mass%, and a thiophene sulfur content is 10 mass%, based on the total sulfur content; and a step of reducing the sulfur content in the hydrocarbon to 10 mass ppm by separating the sulfur compounds of increased molecular weights through distillation.
