To provide a refining method of iron which has high productivity and reduces the consumption of oxygen.
Iron ore 20 is partially reduced by using a secondary reaction vessel 24 and further, carbon-containing material is partially oxidized, and by this method, the partially reduced secondary iron ore and charcoal and calory gas 27 having about 0.25 of content ratio of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, are formed. The calory gas 27 is separated from the partially reduced secondary iron ore and charcoal and the obtd. solid is introduced into a primary reaction vessel 10 without practically cooling. The whole or a part of iron product is formed from the partially reduced iron produced in the primary reaction vessel 10. Since the secondary reaction vessel is operated at lower temp. than the primary reaction vessel, a part of the iron product is treated at low temp. and therefore, the required quantity of the oxygen needed to refining, is reduced, and the thermal efficiency is improved.
