PURPOSE: To automatically return a sheet to be rolled to the middle part of a roll by automatically detecting the generation of meandering of the sheet to be rolled and restraining the progress of meandering of the sheet to be rolled.

CONSTITUTION: The meandering restraining method in a skin pass rolling mill is executed, after rising pressure to the target rolling force, by storing the position of oil column of a hydraulic rolling-down cylinder (S3, S8), operating the skin pass rolling mill by constant pressure screw-down control (S9) and always monitoring the positional deviation of the position of oil column of the hydraulic rolling-down cylinder while operating the skin pass mill by constant pressure screw-down control. When this positional deviation is a specific amount or more (Yes in S12), the position of oil column the hydraulic rolling-down cylinder is returned to the stored position of oil column, the skin pass rolling mill is operated by normal screw-down control (S14) and the force deviation in the rolling force of the hydraulic rolling-down cylinder is always monitored while operating the skin pass rolling mill by normal screw-down control. When this force deviation is the specific amount or less (Yes in S16), the skin pass rolling mill is operated by constant pressure screw-down control (S17).
