Abstract:
PURPOSE:To protect a columnar shaft from damage, by laying the shaft through a hole defined by the inside wall of a hollow annular packing and by introducing a pressurized fluid into the internal opening of the packing to bring its inside surface into tight contact with the peripheral surface of the columnar shaft. CONSTITUTION:A hollow annular packing 2 is made of a material of good elasticity and has an inside diameter slightly larger than the outside diameter of a columnar shaft 1 to be sealed up. The diameter of a insertion hole defined by the inside wall surface 22 of the packing 2 is normally slightly larger than the outside diameter of the columnar shaft 1. To seal up the shaft by the packing 2, a compressed fluid 5 is introduced under pressure into the internal opening of the packing 2 through a feed port 21. At that time, the inside surface 22 is expanded inward in the radial direction, the diameter of the insertion hole is reduced and the inside surface 22 is brought into tight contact with the peripheral surface of the columnar shaft 1. This results in preventing the flow of the fluid between two regions A, B which extend in the axial direction of the columnar shaft 1 and are partitioned from each other by the packing 2.
