PURPOSE: To selectively oxidize a wide variety of organic compounds such as ethylene, propylene, toluene and xylene most simply by using a most inexpensive oxidizing agent comprising elemental oxygen, a catalyst composed of palladium and copper, and carbon monoxide.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of a catalyst containing palladium and copper and, simultaneously, by allowing carbon monoxide to be present together, organic compounds are selectively oxidized by elemental oxygen. The organic compounds include, e.g. ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 2-butene, 1-n-octene, cyclopentene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, n-propylbenzene, i-butylbenzene, phenol, chlorobenzene and cyclohexanone. By oxidizing these organic compounds with the use of this oxidizing agent, the epoxide, glycol, glycol ester, catechol, hydroquinone, -caprolactone or the like which corresponds to the olefin can be obtained.
