Title:
METHOD FOR SEPARATING PRIMARY ALCOHOL COMPONENT IN VETIVER OIL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3565444
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To efficiently separate a primary alcohol useful as a higher perfume material free from an offensive smell such as heated smell, etc., from a vetiver oil without heat history by half esterifying a primary alcohol of a vetiver oil, making the half ester adsorbed on an ion exchange resin and desorbed and hydrolyzing.
CONSTITUTION: A crude half ester product (ER) of a primary alcohol obtained by reacting a vetiver oil with succinic anhydride is adsorbed on an ion exchange resin and then desorbed to give a purified half ester product(EP), which is hydrolyzed to separate the objective primary alcohol from the vetiver oil. For example, a vetiver oil is reacted with succinic anhydride in an organic solvent at 80-120°C and washed with water to give ER, which is adsorbed on a strongly basic anion exchange resin. A non-absorbing substance is removed by a hydrocarbon solvent and a water soluble solvent, the resulting substance is treated with an aqueous solution of an alkali and the half ester is extracted from the desorbed solution with an organic solvent and the solvent is distilled away to give EP. EP is hydrolyzed with an alkali to separate the objective primary alcohol.
