Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of rapidly forming silk fibroin gelation and a method of encapsulating materials in silk fibroin.SOLUTION: A ultrasonication method for silk fibrin comprises: exposing silk fibroin, under the appropriate conditions concerning the silk fibrin concentration, added salts and the pH, to a treatment comprising ultrasonication for a sufficient period of time to initiate gelation in which the gelation forms substantially within 24 hours after the ultrasonication treatment; controlling the gelation to occur within two hours after the ultrasonication treatment; encapsulating biological materials, including viable cells, or therapeutic agents in hydrogels formed by the method; and allowing them to be used as delivery vehicles.
