PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make microorganisms stick on the surface of a carrier in a short time by a method wherein the carrier in a cleaning apparatus is immersed in a raw water contg. org. substances until a viscous slime is formed on the surface of the carrier and thereafter, a seed sludge is fed therein and the raw water is made to pass through it.
SOLUTION: A carrier 2 on which microorganisms can stick is filled in a processing tank 1 and a raw water inlet pipe 3 is connected with the lower part of this processing tank 1 and a processing water pipe 4 is connected with the upper part. In addition, before a seed sludge is fed, waste water to be a raw water is fed into the processing tank 1 from the raw water inlet pipe 3 and the carrier 2 is immersed in this raw water. Under this condition, it is kept on standing for a predetermined period to make a filter medium hydrophilic and a viscou slime such as saccharide and hydrocarbon formed by hydrolysis of org. substances in the raw water is formed on the surface of the carrier 2 and thereafter, the seed sludge is fed to make the raw water pass through it. It is possible thereby to make microorganisms stick on the surface of the carrier 2 in a short time.
