PURPOSE: To obtain an olefin having either a functional group unsuitable for ionizing reaction or an extended carbon chain by readily substituting an olefinic compound utilizing free radical reaction without using a tin compound having strong toxicity as a raw material.
CONSTITUTION: This method for substituting an olefinic compound of formula I (X is an alkoxycarbonyl capable of activating vinyl carbon for the free radical addition, phenyl which may have a substituent group, nitrile, H or a halogen; R1 to R3 are each an alkyl or an aromatic group; at least one of R1 to R3 is the aromatic group comprises adding a free radical (Y.) (Y is a free radical capable of adding to the vinyl carbon of the raw material compound) to the carbon atom forming the terminal vinyl group of the olefinic compound, then eliminating a carbon-centered radical [.C(R1)(R2)(R3)], subsequently substituting the carbon-centered radical with Y and produce an olefin of formula II having terminal double bond. An α-substituted styrene of formula IV can be produced from an olefinic compound of formula III by utilizing the reaction.
