Title:
METHOD FOR SULFONATION
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3271238
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sulfonation method by which a (waste) polystyrene resin can be sulfonated in a high reactant concentration to stably convert it into a polyelectrolyte.
SOLUTION: In sulfonating a polystyrene resin in a solvent, an alicyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon is added to the reaction system. The alicyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon used is a six-membered alicyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon (limonene). The amount of addition is 0.01-5wt.% based on the styrene polymer. The alicyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon is sulfonated during the sulfonation of the polystyrene resin, and the sulfonate acts as a surfactant for the product slurry to improve its dispersibility. As a result, the sulfonation reaction can be stably performed even when the reactant concentration is high during the sulfonation.
