To provide a method for efficiently producing an optically active β-hydroxysulfonic acid compound by a simple operation.
This method for synthesizing the optically active β- hydroxysulfonic acid compound is characterized in that a β-ketosulfonic acid compound represented by formula 1 [wherein, R1 is a (substituted) alkyl or phenyl such as methyl, i-propyl, n-heptadecane and 4-n-octylphenyl; and R2 is sodium or an alkyl such as ethyl] is hydrogenated in an acidic solvent in the presence of a divalent Ru complex having 2,2'-bis-(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'- binaphthyl as a ligand, which is an asymmetrically synthetic catalyst to provide the compound represented by formula 2 [wherein, R1 is a (substituted) alkyl or phenyl such as methyl, i-propyl, n-heptadecane and 4-n-octylphenyl; R2 is sodium or an alkyl such as ethyl; and (*) represents and asymmetric carbon].
