To provide a method for selectively synthesizing a tertiary carboxylic acid or its ester under a mild condition, and to provide a catalyst for synthesizing the same.
This method for synthesizing the tertiary carboxylic acid or its ester comprises reacting at least one kind of compound which is selected from olefins composed of 4 or more carbon atoms and alcohols composed of 4 or more carbon atoms with carbon monoxide and water, or with the carbon monoxide and an alcohol, in a strong acid, wherein the tertiary carboxylic acid or its ester is synthesized by conducting the reaction in the presence of at least one kind of cationic metal carbonyl catalyst selected from a group comprising a cationic iridium carbonyl catalyst, a cationic osmium carbonyl catalyst, a cationic ruthenium carbonyl catalyst, a cationic iron carbonyl catalyst, a cationic rhenium carbonyl catalyst, a cationic manganese carbonyl catalyst, a cationic tungsten carbonyl catalyst, a cationic molybdenum carbonyl catalyst, a cationic chromium carbonyl catalyst, and a cationic vanadium carbonyl catalyst.
