Abstract:

To improve the controllability of an engine idle speed of a hybrid electric vehicle.

A method and a system control an idle speed of a drive system or transaxle 10 of the hybrid electric vehicle including an internal combustion engine 12, a generator/motor 14 connected to the engine 12 by means of a planetary gear mechanism 20, and an electric motor 16. The drive system 10 includes a brake or clutch assembly 34 operable via selective connection to the generator/ motor 14 and effective in supplementing reaction torque generated by the generator to thereby control an idle speed of the engine 12 in a wide range of engine operating states in cooperation with the generator/motor 14.
