Abstract:

To provide a method and a system operable in the daytime and nighttime to produce molten steel by melting a cold iron source, e.g. iron scrap, at low cost.

A melting furnace 1 containing iron scrap 3 comprises an oxygen burner 16 having a capacity for melting the iron scrap 3 in the melting furnace 1 by itself, and an arc electrode 6 having a capacity for melting the iron scrap 3 in the melting furnace 1 by itself. The iron scrap 3 is melted principally by the arc electrode 6 during the time band of low electric cost and melted principally by the oxygen burner 16 during the time band of high electric cost.
