To provide an optical transmission method and an optical transmission system capable of shortening fault time in a system by the minimum control of polarization entering to an optical fiber, reducing the risk of deterioration in transmission quality by the erroneous control of polarization, and relieving the request to reliability in an optical device.
A light signal outputted from an optical transmitter is allowed to pass through a polarization control means, and then is transmitted to the optical fiber to monitor the error rate or PMD (polarization mode dispersion) of a reception signal at a reception side. Only when the deterioration in transmission quality by the PMD becomes large, and the error rate or PMD exceeds a threshold, the polarization entering to the optical fiber is polarized at a transmission side for suppressing deterioration in the waveform by PMD. And both the error rate and PMD are simultaneously used for determining control start.
