To maximize the throughput of a communication link by receiving an encoded message at a reception station and decoding the message according to an error correction encoder.
A base station 2 encodes a forward channel message block through a Reed-Solomon encoder and each mobile station receives and decodes this block. Each mobile station 4 is programmed so as to decode any parity check or error correction encoder. In order to improve the rate of transmission success from the specified mobile station 4 to the base station 2, the mobile station 4 executes the Reed-Solomon encoder for backward channel message block with high adaptability. The mobile station 4 in a cell is made adaptive to a code rate with signal characteristics measured in relation with each specified mobile station independently of all the other mobile stations 4. Therefore, the mobile station 4 close to the base station 2 for high-quality communication signals has a high code rate and the mobile station away from the base station has a low code rate. The error correction encoder is made adaptive based on the signal characteristics of a backward channel 6.
