To give a cellulosic fiber product a function in which a cleaning effect almost equivalent to the case where a detergent is used is obtained, even if washing is performed without using a detergent.
The method for treating a cellulosic fiber or a cellulosic fiber product includes a step of applying hydrophilization treatment to a cellulosic fiber or a cellulosic fiber product, and a step of crosslinking the cellulosic fiber or the cellulosic fiber product to which the hydrophilization treatment has been applied using an ester-based finishing agent and a carbodiimide-based crosslinking agent, where the ester-based finishing agent contains an oxidation modified or acid modified polyethylene and an ester compound formed by esterification reaction with an aliphatic alcohol or an ethylene oxide of an aliphatic amine and/or a propylene oxide adduct. In formula [1], R1 denotes an HO-group or an HO(R2O)a-group, R2 denotes an alkylene group having 2-4 carbons, (a) denotes an integer of 1-200, b denotes an integer of 1-100, R4s may be the same or different and denote a hydrogen atom or an -SO3X group (X denotes a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal, or an amine), and R3 denotes hydrogen atom or a group shown in formula [2] (not shown).
