To provide a method for treating plant material, capable of easily retrieving useful components such as ethanol, lignin and pulp from the plant material.
The method comprises the following process: Plant material(phytobiomass) is heat-treated in an alcohol solvent under an oxygen atmosphere to obtain a heat-treated product comprising a first liquid component and a first solid component followed by making a solid-liquid separation of these components. By the above treatment, most of lignin in the phytobiomass is oxidatively decomposed and dissolved in the solvent while most of cellulose and hemicellulose in the phytobiomass becomes solid residues insoluble to the solvent. By oxidation in the oxygen atmosphere under relatively mild conditions through making the best use of such a characteristic that the lignin component in the phytobiomass is susceptible to oxidation compared to carbohydrate components such as cellulose and hemicellulose, a pretreatment product for papermaking pulp or enzymatic saccharification can be obtained efficiently.
