To provide a method for treatment of cyanide-containing water, which sufficiently achieves treatment for removing cyanide compounds while inhibiting generation of toxic cyanide gas as much as possible.
A divalent copper salt and a reducing agent for reducing a divalent copper salt to a monovalent copper salt are added to cyanide-containing water containing free cyanide, and after the addition, the free cyanide reacts with the copper salts. Specifically, the divalent copper salt is reduced to a monovalent copper salt by the reducing agent, and monovalent copper reacts with the cyanide compounds to generate a sparingly soluble salt comprising the monovalent copper and cyanogen as a precipitate. Subsequently, the cyanogen is decomposed. The pH of treat water during the reaction is 5.5 or more and less than 6.2. A sulfate is used for either one or both of the divalent copper salt and the reducing agent.
