PURPOSE: To obtain a surface-worked roll of high uniformity by projecting a laser beam to the roll surface while revolving the roll thereby dulling said surface.

CONSTITUTION: A support base 2 for a roll R to be worked is provided on a working base 11. The base 2 is provided with driving units 21 and 22 and is of the construction that permits adjustment and movement in the three directions; the horizontal directions of mutually orthognally intersecting longitudinal and cross and vertical direction, by which the roll R is horizontally supported rotation-drivably. A laser beam generator 3 is provided above a working chamber 1, and a beam intensity adjusting part 2, a beam flux adjusting part, a beam position deflecting and adjusting part, etc. are provided on the outside of the laser gun. In working, the beam is scanned over the entire circumferential direction of the roll surface while the roll R installed to the base 2 is being rotated little by little, whereby a regular pattern C is obtained to arbitrary patterns accurately in a short time.
