To provide methods of installing and removing a special step on and from an escalator, capable of reducing costs while providing good workability and high security.
A row of steps of an escalator which circulate during travel comprises normal steps 3 and at least one special step 1 for carrying a wheelchair. The row of steps is installed by the steps of installing a predetermined number of normal steps 3 at the entrance 5 of a lower story; then installing the special step 1; and installing the normal steps 3 again. After the predetermined number of normal steps 3 are installed, the escalator is operated so that the normal step 3b on which to place the special step 1 is temporarily moved to near the entrance 5. Next, the special step 1 is placed onto the normal step 3 from the entrance 5 and is transported to a predetermined position, where it is then installed.
