Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods and systems for removing solids that may cause clogging and corrosion in a refinery system in implementing crude oil refinery processes.SOLUTION: Methods include the steps of: adding water to crude oil to produce an emulsion comprising brine and oil as well as solids; separating oil from brine, including the substep of producing brine comprising a rag layer; separating the rag layer into a hydrocarbon emulsion comprising finer solids and brine comprising larger solids; and passing the hydrocarbon emulsion through a cross-flow filter to produce a retentate comprising brine and solids as well as a permeate comprising hydrocarbon.
