Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a methyl cellulose having more enhanced gel strength than a conventional methyl cellulose.SOLUTION: A method for producing a methyl cellulose comprises the steps of: a) reacting a cellulose pulp with a first amount of aqueous alkaline or a first amount of methylating agent at reaction conditions sufficient to methylate the cellulose pulp to a first methoxy substitution level which is about 20% or more of a desired total methoxyl substitution level; and b) reacting the methyl cellulose of the first methoxy substitution level with a second amount of aqueous alkaline or a second amount of a methylating agent at reaction conditions sufficient to methylate it to a second methoxy substitution level which is about 40% or more of a desired total methoxyl substitution level.
