PURPOSE: To produce an amide compound in high yield, space time yield, and bacterial cell productivity, by hydrating a nitrile compound by the action of microorganisms having nitrilase activity under the radiation of light.
CONSTITUTION: A nitrile compound is hydrated and converted to the corresponding amide compound by the action of microorganisms having nitrilase activity. In the above process, the hydration reaction is carried out in a vessel made wholly or partly of an opaque material, a Gram-positive microbial strain belonging to Corynebacterium genus, Nocardia genus, etc., is used as the microorganism, and the microorganism is irradiated with light of about 100W1,000nm wavelength and having an intensity of about ≥1×10-2μE/g=cell.sec, preferably about 2×10-2μE/g-cell.sec prior to the completion of the hydration reaction.
