Abstract:
PURPOSE: To increase the concentration of the produced androstane compound having dehydrogenated A-ring in the microbiological oxidation of sterols, by adding activated charcoal to the cultivation medium.
CONSTITUTION: An androstane compound having dehydrogenated A-ring, e.g. 4- androstene-3,17-dione, is prepared by the microbiological oxidation of cholesterol, stigmasterol, or those having dehydrogenated A-ring, in a medium containing carbon. The amount of the activated charcoal added is usually 0.5-10 g/l, pref. 1-5 g/l. The microbilas used are, e.g. Arthrobacter simplex (IAM 1660), Brevibacterium lipolyticum (IAM 1398), etc.
