To perform rolling suitable to hard materials and extra thin materials by supporting small-diameter work rolls with high reliability even under transient conditions such as the starting time of rolling work and completing time of the rolling work.
Non-driven both-end supporting rolls 9, 10, 11, 12 are installed at both ends on the outside of the region where sheets having the maximum width Wmax of the work roll 3 are passed through so as to be faced to each other on the inlet and outlet sides of each end part and the work rolls are pressed and supported by them. Hydrostatic bearings 21, 23 are installed in the middle part on both sides of the barrel of the work rolls 3, the work rolls 3 are floated by forming clearances between the hydrostatic bearings 21, 23 and the work rolls 3 by supplying fluid such as oil to the bearing parts from fluid pressure supply ports 25, 26 and supported in the horizontal direction in non-contact state. The proper floating height and supporting force are set or controlled by changing the supplying pressure of the fluid which is supplied to the hydrostatic bearings 21, 23.
