To precisely determine misfire of a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine with an output shaft connected to a post-stage via a torsion element.
Whether a resonance cycle based on the torsion of a damper 28 is in a region equivalent to one rotation of an engine 22 (the primary region of rotation) or in a region equivalent to two rotations (the 0.5th region of rotation) is determined (S130). When the resonance cycle is in the 0.5th region of the rotation, the misfire is determined by a determination value JT (0.5) of the 360 sum of a duration difference TD30 (S150, S160), and when it is in the primary region of the rotation, the misfire is determined by a determination value JT(1) of the 360 difference of the duration difference TDS 30 (S170, 180). This permits more precise determination of the misfire of the engine 22 according to the resonance cycle based on the torsion of the dumper 28.
