PURPOSE: To improve a registration accuracy by a method wherein color printing is conducted after a plurality of evaluation patterns are sequentially read, and after a required evaluation pattern is selected, a misregistration amount among three primary colors is determined on the basis of characteristics coincident with the required evaluation pattern by referring to evaluation information.
CONSTITUTION: A printer is provided with a first memory means A storing image data to be printed, a second memory means B storing a plurality of evaluation patterns differing in combination of a line width, a line color, and a background color surrounding the line and evaluation information representing a relation between a subjective evaluation value and a misregistration, and a selection means C switching the first memory means A and the second memory means B. Color printing is conducted after said two or more evaluation patterns are sequentiallty read. After a required evaluation pattern is selected, a misregistration amount among three primary colors is determined on the basis of characteristics coincident with said required evaluation pattern by referring to said evaluation information. For example, the second memory means B is a read only memory (ROM), the selection means C is a multiplexer, and the evaluation patterns are composed of a most strict evaluation pattern, a relatively strict evaluation pattern, and an average evaluation pattern.
