PURPOSE: To obtain a mixture of a polyoxypropylene fatty acid alkanolamide compound excellent in thickening properties, foam increasing properties, foaming stability, emulsification dispersibility, cleanability, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A fatty acid alkyl ester of formula I (R is a 7-21C hydrocarbon; R1 is a 1-3C alkyl) is amidated with an alkanolamine of the formula N2 N-(CH2CH2O)p-H ((p) is 1 or 2) in the presence of a base catalyst (e.g. sodium methoxide) at 50-150°C to give a reaction mixture containing a fatty acid alkanolamide of formula II. Ethylene oxide is added to the compound of formula II contained in the reaction mixture to give a reaction mixture containing a polyoxyethylene fatty acid alkanolamide of formula II (EO is oxyethylene; m is an integer of ≥0). Propylene oxide is added to the compound of formula III containing in the reaction mixture to give the objective substance of formula IV (PO is a 3C oxyalkyelne; n is an integer of ≥0).
