PURPOSE: To obtain the mixture showing a columnar interim phase which can maintain stability indefinitely in a very wide range of temperatures by allowing a specific macrocyclic tetramer to react with a mixture of acyl halides.
CONSTITUTION: The objective mixture is obtained by allowing (A) a macrocyclic tetramer and (B) a mixture of acyl halides of the formula R-X [X is a halogen; R is [COR' (R' is a ≥5C, usually a 5-25C chain alkyl)], wherein at least 2 kinds of halides having different number of carbon atoms are mixed, to react with each other. This process can be carried out under an ordinary pressure at 50 to 200°C by bulk esterification. It is preferable that the component (A) is obtained by a condensation of pyrogallol and aldehyde in a solvent such as methanol or the like at an ordinary temperature in the presence of an acid catalyst. As the component (B), for example, a mixture of octanoylchloride and tetradecanoyl or the like can be used.
