To provide a portable terminal apparatus which users carry during walking, is designed to save power, and automatically decides a positioning timing at required location depending on the situation.
The portable terminal apparatus contains a pedometer and makes use of step number, counted by the pedometer, as a positioning timing. When positioning is performed by a GPS at the beginning to start navigation, a step number to the next positioning timing is computed based on a distance or route from the positioned present position to a destination; when the pedometer has counted the computed step number, next positioning is performed by the GPS; and a step number to the next positioning timing is further computed based on the determined present position. The step number to the next positioning timing is set so that as the step number to the next route change point in the route from the positioned present position to the destination or the distance from the positioned present position to the destination becomes shorter the step number to the next positioning timing becomes less.
