To provide a bill discrimination device capable of easily performing mode setting from the outside by inserting a mode setting medium recording mode setting information to a bill insert port.
This bill discrimination device 100 comprises an inlet sensor 1 detecting insertion of a medium to the bill insert port not shown; a carrying drive part 2 carrying the medium inserted to the bill insert port along a carrying passage; a discrimination sensor 8 provided in the carrying passage and discriminating the medium inserted to the bill insert port; a nonvolatile memory (storage means) 6 storing various pieces of information (mode setting information recorded in the mode setting medium described below); a control/discrimination processing part (control means) 7 performing discrimination and carrying controls; and a ROM 9 storing an operation program determining an operation sequence. The discrimination sensor 8 comprises, for example, an LED 3 illuminating the medium, a light receiving sensor 4 receiving an optical image of the medium illuminated by the LED 3, and a magnetic sensor 5 reading magnetic information recorded in the medium.
