To impart fibers with high hydrophilicity and heat controllability by reacting an alcohol such as a polyol with the fibers to effect grafting and modify the surface of the fibers.
Fiber surface is modified through the following process: polyester fibers, polyamide fibers, or a woven fabric or nonwoven fabric comprising such fibers, is provided with a treatment liquid prepared by adding a catalyst (e.g. an organic acid such as formic acid or acetic acid, inorganic acid such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid or phosphoric acid, a salt such as of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or lithium hydroxide to an aqueous solution of 0.01-10 wt.% a polyol such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polybutylene glycol or a modified polymer thereof, pref. polyvinyl alcohol 1,000-200,000 in molecular weight, and a graft polymerization is subsequently carried out at 50-220°C, pref. 150-180°C, to graft the polyol to the fiber surface.
