Title:
MODIFIED NOVOLAK
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH02151615
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a modified novolak useful as a reinforcing resin of rubber and elastomer by mixing unmodified novolak with terpenes and unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or derivatives of these compounds at a specified temperature.

CONSTITUTION: Unmodified novolak is mixed with terpenes and unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or derivatives of these compounds as a modifying component at 80-300°C so that the weight ratio of terpenes to unsaturated carboxylic acid or its derivative is within the range of (98.5:2.5)-(2.5:98.5), and the weight ratio of phenol component to the total of modifying components is within the range of (65:5)-(5:95) to produce a modified novolak based on trifunctional phenol with respect to formaldehyde, which has a melting point of 45°C or higher. The modified novolak is useful as a reinforcing resin of rubber and elastomer, a thickener of rubber, a binder for frictional brake lining, cross-linkable molding rubber, impregnating agent, coating agent and paint, and a binder for inorganic material of fine particle.
