PURPOSE: To impart excellent radiation resistance and rubbery properties to polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) by irradiating the PTFE with an ionizing radiation in a specific dose at a temp. higher than the melting point of the PTFE crystals in the absence of oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: A polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) sheet is placed in a vacuum or an oxygen-free atmosphere, e.g. an inert gas atmosphere, and irradiated with an ionizing radiation (e.g. γ-ray) in a dose of 1kGy or more at a temp. higher than the melting point of the PTFE crystals. Thus, a modified PTFE is obtained which is prevented from deteriorating in breaking extension and breaking strength upon exposure to a radiation. This modified PTFE is utilizable as an industrial material to be exposed to a radiation and as a medical material sterilizable with a radiation; PTFE has been unusable in these applications. Since also rubbery properties are imparted, the modified PTFE is suited also for use as a heat-resistant sealing material for an instrument, etc.
