PURPOSE: To obtain a surface catalyzed membrane with improved transportation characteristics by including a transportation layer substantially comprising a transition metal compd. by which species activated by a catalyst deposited on a first surface of a support having micropores in a region extending from the first surface toward a second surface can be transported.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst 14 is applied on a first surface of a microporous support 2 as an island film. The thin island film of the catalyst 14 is overcoated with an almost continuous transporting layer 16 selected from transition metal compounds which transport dissociated hydrogen molecules. It covers the catalyst 14 and seals the microporous support 2 at a first surface of the membrane. Thereby, a product 8 is formed by the reaction of molecules 10 and 12. The reactant 12 is diffused through a porous carrier 4. The microporous support 2 is activated by the catalyst 14 to form activated species 18. The activated species 18 are diffused through the transporting layer 16 to form the product 8 by the reaction with the reactant 10.
