The moisturizing plant extract consists of an extract from a mixture of Zizyphus jujuba Miller var. inermis Rehder, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisher or Glycyrrhiza glabra Linne, Platycodon grandiflorum A. De Candolle and Zinziber officinale Roscoe. The external preparation, cosmetic, bathing agent and cleanser composition each containing the extract are also provided, respectively. A product made by decocting a prescribed ratio of the above-mentioned crude drugs is called Hainoutou in the traditional Chinese medical science, being identical to a composition with medicaments regarded as being used in the early stages of suppurative dermatoses by oral administration. The above extract contains moisturizing plant components with sustainable moisturizing effect for a long time, and exhibits effects, by external use, on preventing, mitigating or ameliorating dry skin, rough skin, chapped skin, itching and inflammatory diseases, and on the hair, in curing dryness, rough feeling, split hair and broken hair and imparting gloss, and the like.
