PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a molding machine and a method for controlling the molding machine for executing precision work, while being simple in mechanical engineering structure.SOLUTION: A molding machine (1) includes at least one molding tool (25) acting on molding of a workpiece arranged in a work area (23) of the molding machine (1). The molding machine (1) includes a light section sensor (13) for indicating input for a molding control device (27), for arranging at least the one molding tool (25) to the workpiece in molding, by turning the molding machine (1) to the workpiece arranged in the work area (23) of the molding machine (1). In a control method of the molding machine (1), the molding machine (1) is a ring rolling machine (4), and is provided with at least a pair of radial rolls (10) and/or at least a pair of axial rolls (11 and 12) as the molding tool (25), and the light section sensor (13) measures up to a second roll of a pair of rolls from a first roll of the pair of rolls.
