Abstract:

To provide a monitoring apparatus for all optical networks, which can monitor a wavelength dispersion amount and a nonlinear phase shift amount inexpensively as compared with a conventional technique, and to provide an in-service monitoring method.

The monitoring apparatus includes: a means for modulating continuous light by a signal generated from a signal of a prescribed frequency and including a first frequency and a second frequency which are integer multiples of the prescribed frequency, and generating a monitoring optical signal including an optical carrier, a first sideband shifted from the optical carrier to the high frequency side or the low frequency side by the first frequency and a second sideband shifted from the optical carrier to the high frequency side or the low frequency side by the second frequency; a means for changing transmission power of the monitoring optical signal; and a means for converting the received monitoring optical signal into electric signals, extracting a first electric signal of the first frequency and a second electric signal of the second frequency, multiplicating and/or dividing the frequency of the first electric signal to generate a third electric signal of the second frequency, and measuring a phase difference between the second electric signal and the third electric signal.
