PURPOSE: To make it possible to impart functions such as an ability to selectively scavenge, separate or transfer ions or metals to a thin polyimide film to made it useful for a metal separation membrane, an ion-selective electrode, etc., by introducing a crown ether group into said thin polyimide film.
CONSTITUTION: A monomolecular film or a monomolecular built-up film is formed by using a polyimide having repeating units of formula I (wherein R1 is a tetravalent aromatic group, and R2 is a bivalent organic group having a crown ether structure) as a constituting component. This film is produced by casting a solution of a polyamic acid of formula II (wherein R1 and R2 are as defined above) and a long-chain alkylamine in an organic solvent on the surface of water, forming a monomolecular film or monomoleculer built-up film of the polyamic acid derivative on a base and imidating this film. The film is excellent in mechanical strengths, heat resistance, chemical resistance, etc.
