PURPOSE: To obtain a monoterpene glycoside useful as an industrial germicide or a bacteriostat because of possession of antimicrobial action and suitable as flavoring agent and cholagogue.
CONSTITUTION: A monoterpene glycoside shown by formula I or formula II (R is H or acyl) such as periloside B having the following properties. Properties: colorless needle-like crystal. Melting point: 154-155°C. Molecular formula: C16H24O7. Elemental analysis; C 58.5%, H 7.25%. Solubility: readily soluble in water, methanol, etc., and slightly soluble in ethyl ether. The compound is obtained by extracting leaf part of perilla with a water-soluble organic solvent such as methanol, concentrating the extracted solution, filtering off the precipitate, then extracting the filtrate, from which lipids are removed, with chloroform to give the objective crude fraction and further separating and purifying the objective fraction.
