PURPOSE: To save the capacity of a timing adjustment buffer memory for photocoupler data subjected to MC processing by selecting word configuration in the unit of picture data read to a picture memory at motion compensation and at display.

CONSTITUTION: A word being the unit of picture data read for motion compensation and a word being the unit of picture data reading for display are selected respectively to a structure (word structure) suitable for the purpose. That is, in the case of motion compensation (MC), one word consisting of only luminance Y data D0, D1, D2, D3 and one word consisting of only chroma C(Cb, Cr) data D2, D3, D0, D1 are read in time division and in the case of display, one word comprising the Y data D0, D1 and the C(Cb, Cr) data D2, D3 on an even line and one word comprising the Y data D2, D3 and the C(Db, Dr) data D0, D1 on an odd line are respectively read.
