To provide a device for controlling an AC motor for a vehicle that has high usage efficiency of a voltage in power running control and high power generation efficiency in a power generating operation.
A motor controlling device has a three-phase rectifiers and switching elements connected between armature coils of the AC motor connected with an internal combustion engine to drive and a DC power source, and has an inverter function of inverting DC power from the DC power source into AC power to feed the AC power to the armature coils and a converter function of converting AC power generated by the AC motor into DC power to feed it to the DC power source. A rectangular wave drive control is carried out that impresses a rectangular wave voltage to the armature coils of the AC motor in the power running of the AC motor, while a synchronizing and rectifying control is carried out that synchronizes and rectifies AC power generated by the AC motor when the AC motor is used as a generator.
