PURPOSE: To quickly detect picture information relating to a desired still picture by recording 1st identification information representing an area on which picture information of a still picture is recorded and recording 2nd identification information to specify picture information of a desired still picture.

CONSTITUTION: This movie camera is provided with a 1st identification signal generating circuit 100 generating a 1st identification signal, a 2nd identification signal generating circuit 47 generating a 2nd identification signal, and a magnetic head 62. Then the 1st identification signal representing an area on which picture information of a still picture is recorded, 2nd identification information to specify picture information of a still picture and picture information read by a CCD 30 are recorded to each recording track of a video tape. In this case, the 2nd identification information is recorded for an idle time for a vertical blanking period and gives no effect of disturbance onto a synchronizing signal and the picture information. Furthermore, in the case of reproducing the still picture, since the 2nd identification information is retrieved at a usual reproduction speed after high speed retrieval of the 1st identification information, the picture information of the specific still picture is surely and quickly detected.
